Films to watch out for in 2007

It rained hits like "Rang De Basanti", "Krrish" and "Vivah" in 2006, and the coming year holds as much promise, if not more, with a slew of interesting movies lined up for release.

2006 has been the best year that Bollywood has had in a long time. With more than 20 hits and even non-performers breaking even financially, the Hindi film trade boomed.

But will it be able to meet heightened audience expectations in the year ahead? Will it be able to keep the momentum going?

On the face of it, 2007 has an interesting and varied menu on offer.

Kickstarting the year is celebrated filmmaker Mani Ratnam's "Guru". The film stars Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, who have been the media darlings ever since rumours of their impending marriage surfaced.

The film is also in news because it is apparently based on the life of an Indian tycoon, who is worshiped as well as loathed by many. "Guru" portrays the protagonist as a person who amasses wealth through dubious means.

The media attention surrounding "Guru" is clearly tremendous and the film is likely to set the cash registers ringing from the first month of 2007 itself.

Before the month-end, director Nikhil Advani's "Salaam-E-Ishq", which is a big budget, mega star cast ode to love, will hit the marquees.

The film features six couples and traces their lives. The star cast includes none other than Salman Khan opposite Priyanka Chopra, Anil Kapoor with Juhi Chawla, John Abraham with Vidya Balan, Akshaye Khanna opposite Ayesha Takia, Sohail Khan and Isha Koppikar and last but not the least our own Govinda, romancing foreigner Shannon Esrechowitz.

A clearer picture of 2007 releases will emerge only when we step into the New Year, but a few producers have finalised the release dates of their films.

Some of the other biggies to watch out for include Yash Raj Films' (YRF) "Tara Rum Pum" starring Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji and directed by Siddharth Anand of "Salaam Namaste" fame.

YRF, in fact, is planning to release at least six to seven films next year. Besides "Tara Rum Pum", there will be "Jhoom Barabar Jhoom", "Chak De India" and "Chudiyan" (working title).

Madhuri Dixit's comeback movie is also likely to be ready in 2007. News reports say YRF plans to start work on another two movies, also to be released next year.

While "Jhoom..." is a Shaad Ali film starring Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek, Preity Zinta, Bobby Deol and Lara Dutta, "Chak De" will feature Shah Rukh Khan in a never before seen avatar of a coach of girls hockey team. YRF have given the responsibility of the film to Shimnit Amin of the "Ab Tak Chhappan" fame.

Yet another film from that same stable that will keep the newswires buzzing will be Pradeep Sarkar's tentatively "Churiyan". The film reportedly brings together Jaya Bachchan, Abhishek, Rani, Konkona Sen Sharma, Anupam Kher and Kunal Kapoor.

Besides YRF, well-known financer Firoz Nadiadwala will back director Ahmed Khan in "Fool N Final" that stars Sunny Deol, Shahid Kapur, Suniel Shetty, Jackie Shroff, Javed Jaffrey, Paresh Rawal, Om Puri, Rajpal Yadav, Vijay Raaz, Razzak Khan, Viveik Oberoi, Bipasha Basu, Arbaaz Khan, Ayesha, Sameera Reddy and Zakir Hussain.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra will return with another magnum opus "Eklavya - The Royal Guard". The promos of the film have been running in theatre halls for a while now and have everyone excited.

Amitabh essays the title role and is supported by Sanjay Dutt, Jackie, Saif Ali Khan, Vidya, Sharmila Tagore, Boman Irani, Jimmy Shergill and Raima Sen.

Director Anurag Basu will tell a tale about "Life In A Metro" along with actors Shiney Ahuja, Shilpa Shetty, Kay Kay Menon, Sharman Joshi, Konkona, Kangana Ranaut and Irrfan Khan in a film produced by UTV.

UTV is also backing "Hat Trick" by Milan Luthria and will release Mira Nair's "The Namesake". The later promises to be treat for movie connoisseurs.

Another small budget but eagerly awaited film will be director Vishal Bharadwaj's "Blue Umbrella" with Pankaj Kapur and Shreya Sharma in the lead roles. The film's promos are already out and garnering interest.

Politically charged director Anurag Kashyap's "Black Friday" may also finally see the light of the day in the year ahead.

Among the other biggies will be Sanjay Leela Bhansalis's "Saawariya", a launch pad of Rishi Kapoor's son Ranbir and Anil Kapoor's daughter Sonam. Apart from that the celebrated director has roped in Rani and Salman for the film, which is being backed by Sony.

If the lip-lock between Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya in "Dhoom 2" left audience wanting for more, then the film to watch out for will be Ashutosh Gowariker's historical "Akbar Jodha".

Munnabhai aka Sanjay Dutta will return to the silver screen in "Mr. Fraud" next year, which is directed by Abbas and Mustan Burmawall. The film also stars Ajay Devgan, Bipasha Basu, Tanushree Datta, Anuj Sawhney and Satish Shah.

The platter already seems overloaded. And as far as what will work and what will not one only needs to look at the trend this year.

Be it a big budget movie, a multi-starrer, a big banner or a small time production house - almost every good movie managed to mint money in 2006.

In 2007 the hottest contested territory will be overseas and everyone will be in for better quality productions. And last but not the least, anything entertaining will be a winner.

Shilpa to sex up Big Brother!

Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty appeared along with former Miss Great Britain Daniella Lloyd and Michael Jackson's brother Jermaine on Celebrity Big Brother, a TV reality show.

The 31-year-old Shilpa Shetty has been included in the list to spice things up or sex up the show for Channel 4 which is likely to be the steamiest so far.

Shilpa has acted in more than 30 Hindi films and her appearance in Celeb Big Brother is bound to be hugely controversial back home in India where public morality is different from what one sees in a Hindi film, analysts said.

However, producers of Big Brother hope to attract more than two million Asians living in the UK.

According to the Sun, 'The Dinner Date challenge will see housemates including former Miss Great Britain Danielle Lloyd and Shilpa Shetty pairing with the person they find most attractive. They will be fitted with special heart-rate monitors and must seduce, flirt and do whatever it takes to get their partners' pulse rates soaring.

The courtship will be "performed" at a candlelit table for two minutes while fellow housemates look on.

The couple with the highest readings win the task. Show bosses are desperate to create another pair of Celebrity Big Brother lovebirds after Preston and Chantelle's courtship helped boost ratings.

Jermaine Jackson, a former member of the Jackson 5, and Danielle Lloyd, a glamour model who lost her Miss Great Britain title, were the first to go in.

Legendary film director Ken Russell was next, followed by former S Club 7 singer Jo O'Meara. Singer Leo Sayer, Shilpa Shetty and Carole Malone, Sunday Mirror columnist, followed.

The next contestant to enter the house was rocker Donny Tourette, lead singer of the punk band Towers of London. Next to enter the house was former pop singer, Ian "H" Watkins, who was a member of the group Steps.

Actress and writer Cleo Rocos was the next to join the celebrities. She shot to fame on The Kenny Everett Show in the 1980s, and said her former co-star would have loved watching the reality TV show.

Dirk Benedict was the final celebrity to enter the house. He became famous in the hit 1980s show The A-Team.

In last year's show, eventual winner Chantelle Houghton had been "planted" as a non-celebrity but proved the most popular contestant.

Another highlight from last year was the MP George Galloway pretending to be a cat, licking milk from the cupped hands of actress Rula Lenska.

Votes from viewers will decide which stars are ejected during the series, which is expected to last about a month.

Each celebrity will nominate a charity and the money raised during the voting process will be split equally between the organisations.

Dev Anand tells all in his Autobiography

By Subhash K Jha

Dev Anand has never known full stops. At 83, he continues to plan two new films in 2007.

But before that he has something truly grand planned for January 2007.

"It's more than 60 years of my life as a film person, my journey from a wannabe in the streets of Mumbai to the actor, writer, director, producer in the studios…everything…all condensed in one book."

The words tumble out in an effervescent flow of unstoppable energy. "My autobiography is ready for publication. The international publishers are coming down on 4 January…We need to sit down and sift through the vast material and eliminate what to record or not to record. This is a historical moment for me."

Dev Saab started writing the autobiography some years back. "When Baghdad was attacked by the US, I was in New York. Every channel showed the grim news about the bombardment. I was at a loose end in my hotel room. That's when I started jotting down my thoughts. Once I started writing I was hooked.

Everything had happened so fast in my life! This process of writing my book has given me a chance to live my own life.I kept writing in fits and starts ….. until last year when I took it up very seriously. I finally finished the book in two months' stretch."

The obvious pride in having done something which no other Bollywood icon has done, bubbles over. "Every line in my book is mine. I haven't got any professional writer to help me. And I didn't type it out because I don't know how to type.

I've handwritten the entire monumental volume of my thoughts. Since every word flows from my mind to my hand and onto paper I'm as excited as a child. Yeh main hoon kitaab ke andar."

Dev Saab has two titles for his autobiography which will be revealed in consulation with the foreign publishers. "Out of my 83 years, 60 years of my active life in the movies is put into this book. And it isn't over yet. It'll only be finished when I'm gone. …

I've discussed everything from my initial struggle to my family, brothers…It required six books to chronicle six decades of my career. But that wasn't possible. So I've condensed it all in book to keep it interesting. After all I don't want readers to get bored. I want them to feel the same excitement that they do when they watch a movie."

Will the book hurt any of the people who are mentioned in it? " I've been honest in the book. I had to be honest. Otherwise I had no business writing my autobiography. But in writing about my life I've made sure not to hurt anyone. I've let certain events in my life be ambiguously dealt with …let people draw their own conclusions.

As for those whose names do crop up…I'd expect the world to be sporting enough. In my journey of life there're so many people I've met. I've of course brought them up in my book. But never to hit them below the belt. That's not my style."

The book should be out in the next few months. "And then the publishers would want me to promote it all all over the world. This isn't an empty boast…I don't think anyone else has attempted what I've in this book."

As for Dev Saab's plans as a director, "I've two films to make. One is a love story called When Heartbeats Are The Same to be shot on Croatia. It'll be my first film in English—again an experiment. Why can't I do a film in English? It's a beautiful subject about an NRI boy and a Croatian girl.

The casting and location are ready. But it's winter in Croatia. So I can ony shoot in in April-May 2007. In the meanwhile I'll be shooting a murder mystery entitled Charge Sheet which I'll be casting as soon as I give over my book to the publishers."

Rakhi is no more an item girl

The after-shocks of Bigg Boss are being felt in the most unexpected places. Rakhi Swant who was happy being the item bomb in films that flaunted her flesh in flashy appearances, has now mended her ways.

In Rahul Rawail's ensemble comedy Buddha Mar Gaya which starts shooting on Jan 25, Rakhi has been cast in a tailor-made role that requires no oomph, only chutzpah.

Says Rawail, "I was hunting for a girl to play this this zany liberated frank and fearless girl called Kim in my comedy. No one seemed to fill bill…until I saw Rakhi on Bigg Boss. I loved her spirit and honesty in the show. I immediately decided to cast her."

Rakhi who will join the ensemble cast comprising Om Puri, Paresh Rawal, Anupam Kher (who plays a corpse!) and Mobhano Modi- Kotwal, had no inhibitions about being inhibited for the first time.

Says Rahul, 'Rakhi has no item songs, no strip-tease element to provide in Buddha Mar Gaya. I'm glad I found her to play the role. I can't think of anyone better," says Rawail who's excited about working with a cast that doesn't require him to look anxiously over his shoulder at the boxoffice.

Mallika in a Nude-Suit row!

A social worker has written to police to take action against actress Mallika Sherawat for obscenity during her performance on New Year's eve at a hotel here.

Activist Vinod Jain told that he had approached police after watching Sherawat's performance in a popular hotel in the northwestern suburb of Juhu on certain TV channels.

Additional Commissioner of Police Bipin Bihari said, "There has been no formal complaint filed with police yet and we received an application from Jain today.

"We will study footage of the event and if the performance attracts the concerned sections of law, the complaint will be filed," he said.

Jain said, "The actress was wearing extremely obscene clothes and dancing in a manner that was very offensive to our culture and women." He approached the Santa Cruz police station to take up the matter since the hotel lies within its jurisdiction.

Jain has sought the filing of a complaint against Sherawat and the organisers of the function under the IPC and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.

Shilpa will date sexiest mate

Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, who features in Britain's reality show "Celebrity Big Brother", is teaching her housemates to chant 'Om'.
Apparently, Shilpa will have a date with a housemate on the show and be encouraged to flirt.

But right now she is concentrating on teaching meditation to her housemates - newspaper columnist Carole Melone and director Ken Russell. The show went on air Jan 3.

"On the second day, after entering the house of 'Celebrity Big Brother', Shilpa tried teaching 'Om' chanting relaxation techniques and meditation to Carole and Russell," said Dale Bhagwagar, Shilpa's publicist.

"And you know what, Shilpa gave Russell some cool instructions on how to inhale and exhale before the trio launched into their first chant," added Bhagwagar.

But her teaching didn't help Carole and Russell much.

"Shilpa explained to them that they were not breathing right. She also told them that nowadays people are so occupied with life and the stuff they have to do that they hardly breathe," added Bhagwagar.

Bhagwagar feels that Shilpa is not going to give up the teaching soon. "She's kinda the pursuing kind, you see," he added.

The Indian coverage of the show will reportedly focus on romance in Shilpa's life. The actress, who is unmarried, will be given an opportunity to dine with the housemate she finds the most attractive.

According to reports, the producers are trying to cash in on the popularity of the Hindi film star among the two million-strong Asian community in Britain.

They are hoping Shilpa will encourage the Asians to watch and participate in the programme.

Other contestants include Michael Jackson's brother Jermaine, A-Team star Dirk Benedict, Donny Tourette of punk band The Towers of London, model Danielle Lloyd, former S Club 7 singer Jo O'Meara, ex-Steps star Ian "H" Watkins and "Kenny Everett" Show actress Cleo Rocos.

Russell, who is 79-years-old, is the oldest of the contestants.

The first instalment of the show was aired in March 2001. It was produced in aid of Comic Relief, as part of a joint effort between Channel 4 and BBC.

In India, "Bigg Boss", an Indian version of the show, is currently running on Sony TV.

Actors who made us laugh in 2006

Laughter is the best medicine. And more is always the merrier! Just like heroes stepped into villain's shoes starting with Shahrukh Khan in Baazigar and Darr, even comedy has turned out to be an area where number of mainstream actors are letting their comic side known. This is the reason why actors like Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Tusshar Kapoor and others find a mention in the list of Top-10 actors who made us laugh this year. And yes, regulars like Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav and Johny Lever are there as always!

Riteish Deshmukh - Apna Sapna Money Money

Riteish Deshmukh's act in the drag for Apna Sapna Money Money is bound to go down as the performance of the year when it comes to making us smile and laugh! It is not an easy task to get into a woman's clothing and carry an entire film on your own shoulders but Riteish's flawless act made it look all so easy. With just some makeup and lots of adas and grace, Riteish flawlessly turned from being a cool dude to a sexy damsel who makes Anupam Kher fall in love with him/her! He refrained from coming up with an unnecessary chest thumping dhak dhak act and concentrated most on walk, facial expressions and voice. Truly the best comic act of the year!

Rajpal Yadav - Chup Chup Ke, Apna Sapna Money Money, Bhagam Bhag, Malamaal Weekly

Over the years Rajpal Yadav has proved to the most dependable of lot when it comes to making people roll over with laughter. He did the same all over again throughout the year with at least three notable performances in Chup Chup Ke, Apna Sapna Money Money and Bhagam Bhag. His mundu act as Paresh Rawal's loyal assistant in Chup Chup Ke was hilarious and kept the film on a high in the entire first half. On the other hand, second half of Apna Sapna Money Money invited Yadav to offer a lot as sat in his tabela and lived his Sarkar fantasy! His just released Bhagam Bhag may not have utilized his potential to the best but there were flashes of brilliance nonetheless.

Paresh Rawal - Malamaal Weekly, Phir Hera Pheri, Chup Chup Ke

He is good. His style is good. His performances are still being liked. But he is getting repetitive, at least when it comes to comic flicks. His biggest causality was just released Bhagam Bhag where he just had a scene or two that raised a chuckle. Thankfully year started on a brilliant note for him in the form of Malamaal Weekly where he was the star of the show and made the film do a bumper business solely on the basis of his face being plastered all over the posters. Followed next films like Phir Hera Pheri and Chup Chup Ke. While in the former he carried on his baburao act seamlessly once again, there was a surprise or two in Chup Chup Ke where he tuned his act a little differently and succeeded again. Lage raho Paresh bhai!

Akshay Kumar - Jaan-E-Mann, Bhagam Bhag

The action hero has now perfected it over the years... i.e. wearing a comic mask and making people laugh along with him. His best performances of the year were in Jaan-E-Mann and Bhagam Bhag where he played completely contrasting characters. His gawky laugh may have become a rage in the campus circles if only Jaan-E-Mann would have avoided a clash with Don. It's a pity that one of the most original comic act set on a suave and polished NASA scientist wasn't seen by many. On the other hand his now-famous-street-smart-character was put to display in Bhagam Bhag where he was terrific once again. Watch him dance to the tune of Behen Dar Gayi - Behan Dar Gayi after a near molestation attempt on Tanushree Dutta and you would know why!

Govinda - Bhagam Bhag

The man may not have made a comeback with style, but comeback he certainly has made! Whatever he was asked to do, he did. Wherever he was asked to stand, he stood. Whatever he was asked to mouth, he spoke. But then an actor can be as good as the script! Though Govinda has always been known to rise above the script, in case of Bhagam Bhag he did what the script demanded and hence wasn't the 100% Govinda as we have known him over the years. Still, there were some brilliant scenes where one could watch vintage Govinda perform which proved that Govinda at even 50% of his real self is much better than many wannabe comic actors. You live on forever, Govinda!

Ranvir Shorey - Pyaar Ke Side Effects, Khosla Ka Ghosla, Mixed Doubles

Will we be seeing more of him in the coming year? Ranvir Shorey has been a known name in the television circuits but he would certainly be seen a lot more on the big screen, especially after a couple of near flawless acts he came up with in Pyaar Ke Side Effects, Khosla Ka Ghosla and Mixed Doubles. After all how many contemporary urban actors would be ready to get into the skin of a character ['Nano' in PKSE] who is repulsive to take a bath for 4-5 days and takes pride in the fact that he changes his clothes once in 2-3 days? His character in Khosla Ka Ghosla was shown to be a typical Delhite and he perfected the accent and body language to the T! Commendable since Ranvir is a Bombay guy for ages!

Uday Chopra - D2

No one can plead before 'Mummy' better than him! He showed that in Dhoom and proved that the same in Dhoom 2 again. He may have been getting flak ever since his debut in Mohabbatein but fact cannot be denied that his stupid antics do make audience smile and sometimes get into peels of laughter whenever he wears his comic hat. One only wonders whether son of India's biggest film making house would be content with these one off comic performances or would aim for something bigger as an actor or probably a director over the years?

Johny Lever - 36 China Town, Phir Hera Pheri

What Rajpal Yadav is to the current decade, Johny Lever was to the 90s. A brilliant actor who had started getting films an opening on his sheer presence and was literally seen in every second release, he has been lying quite low for the last few years. Thankfully his fans had something to cheer about when vintage Johny Lever was seen in 36 China Town and Phir Hera Pheri. Well, it is difficult to imagine him missing in action when it comes to a film by director duo Abbas Mustan!

Tusshar Kapoor - Golmaal

Surprise of the year, though not many may agree but Tushhar Kapoor was one of the brightest spot in this year's comic success Golmaal. As he played a mute guy in the film, he adapted his handicap as his strength and played a chalu guy to the T. The lingo he adopted using only vowels always managed to keep you asking for more and his karate scene with Vrijesh Harjee is still the most remembered. It would be interesting to see what he is up to in 2007!

Kim Sharma - Tom, Dick & Harry

People went to watch Tom, Dick & Harry for 'jhoom jhoom' and other Reshammiya hits but came back smiling. Ok, agreed that the film was tacky and there was nothing much for the family audience due to its double entendres and suggestive moves. But for the masses, there was something to look forward to every time Kim Sharma came on the screen as a cheesy 'machiwaali'. Not sure if she would show the film to her children after a decade but gentry would love to see her cute self if a sequel to Tom, Dock & Harry ever gets made!

Mallika molests a male dancer

On the night of 31st December 2006, a shocking event took place in Mumbai in a five-star Hotel. The Hotel was jam packed with enthusiastic people celebrating the much awaited event of the year. Booze was flowing like the river, cigarettes were polluting and girls were looking hot in their tiny little clothes. Everybody were jumping and screaming, and some were embracing each other in way that an elderly person will be embarrassed to watch it. And then the sensation of the event arrived. Yes, none another than Mallika Sherawat.

But before she arrived, a bunch of people were dancing on the stage on latest bollywood hit songs of the year. And out of the blue, a male dancer lost his maturity and the respect for women and pulled the slacks of another female dancer down. It was shocking. She pulled her slacks up and went back stage. The danced pressed on. How can a man dare to sexually humiliate a woman out in the audience? It is really appalling and against the culture of our country. Women should be respected. Her dignity and modesty should be respected.

What was your reaction after reading this incident? Were you shocked or you felt it was funny?

Actually this incident never happened. I was bluffing. However, I would like to draw your attention to an incident similar in nature.

Mallika Sherawat, in the middle of a dance, actually pulled a male-dancer’s pants down. Yes, she did that in front of the audience and other female dancers laughed at the helplessness of that male dancer as if a joke was cracked.
Mallika molests a male dancer

Are you shocked? No? Why? Just because it is a man, everybody including any woman has the right to sexually molest and humiliate a man. Is this true? Don’t men have dignity? The audiences too weren’t shocked. Why? If it had happened to a woman, the cops would have arrested the man of offending the dignity and modesty of a woman. And when this unfortunate incident happens with a man, people laugh. If this is not gross insensitivity, then what is it? How can the organizer tolerate such an incident. Supposing this act was pre-planned, who was that person to plan such an act? He/she didn’t realize that men too have dignity and modesty, and that he has the right to protect himself from sexual molestation and humiliation. Is a man’s dignity a laughing stock? For a woman, it is.

Even in one episode of Mtv Roadies, a male contestant wearing only towel was attacked by a bunch of girls trying to pull his towel to see him naked in front of the camera. Who is the world will allow this to happen with a girl? But it is considered fun if it happens to a boy. Why? It seems along with women, men too enjoy watching another man being sexually molested or humiliated. Only a mentally ill man can enjoy other’s suffering, let alone the sadist women.

Just so you know, millions of people get inspired by bollywood, and there is every reason to believe that such appalling act will happen in our day-to-day life also. Mallika is already the favourite of many girls. Why do you think girls will not imitate this act? Boys will have to be careful wearing shorts as they can be sexually humiliated by any woman any moment. Already incest is rampant and sadly there is none to realize that now-a-days, boys are becoming more sexually vulnerable at homes. Recently, in a school in Mumbai, a lady teacher stripped three 6-year-old boys and paraded them in the school as a form of punishment. Still people do not realize that boys too have dignity and if they are sexually molested or humiliated, they do get emotionally traumatized.

A few months ago, I saw an unbelievable sight. A girl, 7, was playing with a boy, 5, in the building premises. The girl took the boy behind a tree and asked him to raise his both hands upward. The boy obliged. The girl instantly pulled his pants down and started laughing frenziedly pointing her finger toward his genital. The boy’s reaction was submissive and timid. He was hurt but couldn’t react. One other occasion, the same girl in the fit of rage, in the middle of a game, grabbed that same boy’s genitals and the boy started crying in pain. I repeat the girl is 7 years old and the boy is 5 years old. They are living in the same building on different floors. It is shocking that even after reading this, people still remain passive and refuse to react. They refuse to admit that boys are now becoming victims of sexual abuse in the hands of girls. How shameful!!

If we allow such appalling acts to continue, one needs to remember that there are absolutely no such laws in India that will give a man justice if he is sexually abused by a woman. Besides, when the society is so incredibly insensitive toward male gender, who will want to get more humiliated by the society by complaining of being sexually abused by a woman? The sexually abused man will have to keep mum only because there is none to support him. This is a new trend. Sexually humiliate men. And if we do not oppose now, tomorrow you will fear of going out of the house in this female dominated society. However, it also depends on people whether they consider sexual humiliation of men as women’s rights.
